# Pompeii Opening Hours and Last Admission Times

The Archaeological Park of Pompeii is open throughout most of the year, but closing times and last admission change according to the season.

Knowing the difference between the final entrance time and the actual closing time is important: entering at the last available time leaves only a limited period to explore the archaeological city.

## Pompeii Opening Hours

### From 16 March to 14 October

- Opening: 9:00
- Last admission: 17:30
- Closing: 19:00

These are the longer seasonal opening hours. Visitors entering at 17:30 have only approximately 90 minutes before the archaeological area closes.

### From 15 October to 15 March

- Opening: 9:00
- Last admission: 15:30
- Closing: 17:00

During the winter period, visitors should plan to enter well before the final admission time, especially when they want to see more than the principal buildings.

## What Does “Last Admission” Mean?

The last admission time is the final time at which visitors may pass through the entrance controls. It is not the recommended starting time for a complete visit.

Pompeii is a very large archaeological site. A guided introductory visit normally lasts approximately two hours, while an independent visit can easily require three or four hours.

To explore the site without rushing, it is advisable to enter:

- by 15:30 during the longer opening period;
- by 13:30 during the winter opening period.

Visitors planning a more extensive itinerary should arrive in the morning.

## Is Pompeii Open Every Day?

The Archaeological Park is normally open every day except:

- 1 January;
- 25 December.

Extraordinary openings or closures may occasionally be announced. Before travelling on a public holiday, check the latest information published by the Archaeological Park.

## Are All the Houses Open for the Entire Day?

No. Individual houses, villas, baths, temples and exhibition spaces may follow different opening times.

Some buildings may:

- open later than the archaeological park;
- close before the final site closing time;
- be accessible only during specific time periods;
- close temporarily for restoration, maintenance or safety reasons.

The buildings available during a visit can therefore change from one day to another. Visitors interested in a particular house should check the official list of open buildings shortly before arriving.

## What Is the Best Time to Visit Pompeii?

Entering at 9:00 is generally the most practical choice for visitors who want several hours to explore the site.

A morning visit offers:

- more time to follow a complete itinerary;
- lower temperatures during the warmer months;
- enough time to take breaks without worrying about closing;
- greater flexibility if some buildings follow shorter opening hours.

An afternoon visit can still be suitable for travellers planning a shorter route or a guided tour, but the entrance time should always be compared with the seasonal last admission.

During summer, avoid underestimating the heat. Pompeii has large exposed areas, uneven ancient streets and limited shade.

## Does Pompeii Have a Daily Visitor Limit?

Yes. Pompeii has a daily limit of 20,000 admissions.

From 16 March to 14 October, availability is divided into:

- up to 15,000 admissions between 9:00 and 13:00;
- up to 5,000 admissions from 13:00 until the final entrance time.

Availability may become limited during weekends, public holidays and the busiest travel periods. Advance booking is recommended when the date and time of the visit are already fixed.

## Which Entrance Should You Use?

Pompeii has three main public entrances.

### Porta Marina

Porta Marina is close to the Pompei Scavi–Villa dei Misteri Circumvesuviana station. It is one of the most frequently used entrances by visitors arriving from Naples or Sorrento.

### Piazza Esedra

Piazza Esedra is convenient for the Antiquarium and is frequently used as a meeting area for organised guided tours.

### Piazza Anfiteatro

Piazza Anfiteatro provides access to the eastern side of the ancient city and to the Pompeii for All accessible itinerary.

Visitors who have booked a guided tour must follow the meeting-point instructions shown on their voucher. The meeting point may be outside the archaeological entrance or at a nearby tour office.

## Do Guided Tours Follow the Same Opening Hours?

Yes. Guided visits must take place within the opening hours of the Archaeological Park.

However, each tour has its own:

- departure time;
- meeting point;
- check-in time;
- duration;
- cancellation and late-arrival conditions.

Visitors should arrive at the meeting point at the time indicated on the booking voucher. Arriving directly at the archaeological entrance may result in missing the group.

Available experiences include:

## Plan Your Visit

Before visiting Pompeii, check:

- the opening period applying to your date;
- the final admission time;
- your ticket’s entrance time;
- the correct entrance or tour meeting point;
- the expected duration of your itinerary;
- temporary closures of individual buildings;
- weather conditions, especially during summer.

Tickets are personal and associated with a specific date and entrance time. Arriving after the time indicated on the ticket or tour voucher may result in admission being refused.
